After leaving Sydney we drove a few hours south to Kangaroo Valley to watch Dan shoot a wedding and the following day capture a couple in this beautiful part of Australia.

The final leg of the tour took us to Canberra where Dan photographed another couple in 4 different locations. During that day he took time out to talk about how he makes his images stand out. Skip to 2.45 to get his advice.

After the shoot we had the chance to talk to Tim in detail about why he uses medium format and the benefits of leaf shutter lenses.

Phase One: As an action sports photographer, why do you use a medium format camera system?

Tim Kemple: When people ask me what I like most about shooting medium format, usually they think I love the number of megapixels that it has – but that’s not it. I don’t always need more megapixels. I need better pixels. I need more dynamic range and I need to be able to shoot at high flash syncs.

PO: Why is the fast flash sync capabilities of a leaf shutter lens so important to the way you shoot?

TK: I need the ability to control the lighting on location and freeze the action with the off-camera flash that I love to use. I also need to balance the ambient light with the flash light and the best camera that I’ve shot with, that let’s me do that, is the Phase One system.

PO: Have you tried shooting with any other systems that can produce fast flash sync speeds?

TK: Don’t get me wrong, I’m fully aware of the other solutions and what they can do with a 35mm camera, I do it all the time – I’m well experienced with that. But the bottom line is that you can’t compare them to the amount of light and quality of light that you get on a consistent basis with a leaf shutter lens. The biggest thing with other systems is that they don't use all the power of the flash and they aren’t always reliable which means you can miss a crucial shot.

After leaving Justine in Los Angeles, we jumped on a flight to Sydney and after landing found ourselves with a (strange) lack of jet lag and a few hours to spare. So Tim came up with the idea for this shoot in this incredible location where he demonstrates the benefits of fast flash sync speeds that are possible with the Schneider Kreuznach leaf shutter lenses.
